Practicum Student

Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology; UC Santa Barbara

Isaiah is a first-generation "Blackxican" (Black and Mexican) student pursuing his doctoral degree in the Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology PhD Program at UC Santa Barbara. As an undergraduate, Isaiah participated in a number of scholar programs and assistantships surrounding health disparities. This included being a scholar for the Creating Scientists to Address Cancer Disparities joint SDSU-UCSD summer program (CSP), the Recruitment & Media Coordinator for the Body Image, Sexuality, and Health Lab at SDSU, an Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) scholar, and an undergraduate teaching assistant for a number of diversity-focused courses. As a graduate, Isaiah is also a part of The Healing Space Leadership Team as a student clinician, peer supervisor, and administrative assistant.

His research interests focus on community and peer based coping strategies surrounding minority and intersectional disparities, help-seeking and health behaviors, emotion regulation, and identity-related experiences, especially around minoritized and intersectional Black, Latine, and LGBTQ+ communities. They find their healing in spending "homie-time" with friends, family, and food, and taking naps during their down time.
