"It is not the world of survival of the fittest, but it is the world that you always need to be a little kinder than necessary". This is a teaching my parents taught me and my siblings growing up in Cambodia. Just like most families in Cambodia, our family struggled with the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge and we have suffered and witnessed a great deal of sufferings of others. What really struck me was that my parents always had something to give no matter how little resources they had. There were countless of kind acts that I still vividly remember having witnessed. This profound teaching of kindness has left me with a treasure of resiliency and strengths to navigate my own sufferings as a human being while giving hand to others become one of the core practices in my life. This informs my profession really well. Practicing giving and deep listening is at the core of my work as a therapist. Most of us are trying the best we can, but when we can't see that, life can become difficult. In my experience, deep listening has the power to help the other person to engage deeply with oneself, let go of self-judgment, and achieve self-compassion. Besides practicing deep listening, I am just another human being who happens to have a great love for boba tea and anime :-)
