Group Counseling & Workshops
The Group Counseling Program at Counseling & Psychological Services includes offerings that can help students learn skills, manage distress, and/or build community. All of the group counseling topic categories are listed below. Some things to keep in mind:
- There is no additional cost for groups. CAPS services are covered by your student fees!
- Some groups require a different level of commitment ranging from single-sessions to quarter-long.
- Some groups require a pre-screen to ensure that the group is a good fit for your needs.
- If you are currently located outside of California, your ability to attend may depend on your specific location.
- Some group descriptions fit more than one category, so they are listed multiple times.
Please read through the information for the group(s) you are interested in. If you have any questions, please contact CAPS at (805) 893-4411.
Glossary of Group Counseling Terms
- Drop-in: student can choose to attend just one session or multiple. No expectation of attendance, but may still require an initial registration to get Zoom link access.
- Series: while not a "process group," information being shared builds on itself and it is beneficial to be able to attend all sessions.
- Pre-screen: a short (typically 15-30 minute) appointment with the group leader(s) to ensure that the group you are interested in is a good fit for your needs. These can be scheduled by calling (805) 893-4411 or by submitting a Services Request Form.
- Google request form: each group has a link to a Google Form for registration. This helps keep track of interest and group leaders can reach out with Zoom links and group updates. These will not prompt a pre-screen appointment — those need to be scheduled separately.
- [CLOSED]: this denotes when a group is full, and signups are closed for the quarter. Usually the group will open signups again near the beginning of the next quarter.
- [WAITLIST]: this denotes when a group is full, and students are welcome to sign up to be put on a waitlist.

Looking for a space to slow down and recharge? This group invites students to step away from daily stressors and reconnect with their bodies and breath. When stress piles up, our nervous system can get stuck in “fight-or-flight” mode, sometimes even leading to a freeze response. Yoga offers simple, powerful tools to help restore balance, using breath as a calming and grounding anchor.
Each session typically includes:
Gentle yoga postures (asanas)
Breathing practices (pranayama)
Relaxation & meditative techniques (savasana)
Singing bowls sound bath and/or calming background music to create a soothing atmosphere
Aromatherapy to support relaxation and grounding (optional)
Each session will also explore a unique psychological theme that will guide our yoga and reflective practices. Themes may include self-compassion & love, emotional awareness, inner strength & peace, connection, attention and focus, rest, and navigating change.
Together, we’ll practice slowing down, listening to our bodies, and being present in a supportive group environment.
Who can join?
Any student who wants accessible ways to manage stress and anxiety—no prior yoga experience needed. Just bring curiosity and a willingness to try.
How it works:
Once you register, you’ll receive weekly email reminders and updates. An RSVP is required for each session so the space can be prepared with care. RSVP links will be sent out Thursday afternoons, and participants must confirm by noon on Fridays to reserve their spot.

Does your inner voice sound something like this?
"Am I doing enough?"
"I can't stop. If I slow down, everything will fall apart."
"I did well... but I could've done better."
Maybe everyone thinks you've got it all together, but you're secretly running on empty because no matter what you accomplish, it never feels like enough. Maybe you get A's but still feel like you're behind, hit one goal only to start stressing about the next, or feel guilty anytime you're not being productive.
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
Recovery isn't about becoming less ambitious. It's about unlearning the belief that your worth depends on what you achieve or how productive you are.
Overachievers in Recovery is a six-week skills and insight group for students who want to build a healthier and more sustainable relationship with achievement, success, and themselves. This group isn't about achieving less or changing who you are. It's about learning when to strive, when to pause, and how to actually experience the life you're already working so hard to build.
